Sony has recently released a trailer of an upcoming Miles Morales film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse featuring more than one Spider-Man. It introduces a 14-year-old black-latino Miles Morales who also has super spidey powers and attempts to bring a few Spider-Men together from the Multiverse to defeat a new threat.
It borrows its concept from the comic book arc Spider-Verse written by Dan Slott and drawn by Olivier Coipel and Giuseppe Camuncoli. In this Arc, The Spider heroes from alternate universes join their efforts to stop the threat of an evil vampire Morlun and the Inheritors. They belong to Earth-001 and in order to kill Spider heroes from alternate universes, they capture master weaver who enables them to travel the Multiverse.
Although from the trailer, it looks like they are going to depart slightly away from the comics and the main big bad of the movie might be the arch nemesis of Spiderman, Green Goblin. In the third season of Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, Green Goblin had used a crystal known as Seige Perilous to travel the Multiverse and acquire the DNA’s of different Spider heroes to become Goblin Spider. This will be a nice way to add some color to his character.
In the trailer, Peter Parker has seemingly aged and has taken the responsibility of mentoring the young Miles Morales, who has similar superpowers. We also see Miles Morales acquire his powers just before a fight between Peter Parker’s Spiderman and Green Goblin. It is possible that this fight might mean the end of Peter Parker in the movie.
The trailer also introduces “the funky, free-spirited“ Spider Gwen. It is unclear as to whether she is from Miles’s Universe or from an alternate universe.
The Spidey fans have raised one significant question: How many Spider heroes will we get to see in the movie? Sony has not revealed it yet but at San Diego Comic-Con, we might have an answer to this question.
Let’s look at a few Spider heroes that we want to see in this movie.
SPIDERMAN 2099
He was first introduced by Marvel Comics in 1992 under The Amazing Spider-Man #365 written by Peter David and Rick Leonardi. It is set in a tragic future where organizations controlled the world and new heroes showed up, each motivated by the legends of the past.
Miguel O’Hara is a geneticist at the corrupt organization of Alchemax and is given a dose of an addictive drug by the Organization to make him more compliant. In an attempt to remove the addiction by use of genetic editing, Miguels’s DNA composition gets changed and he becomes a half spider.
Spider-Man 2099 featured a kickass Universe by Peter David. Using the world of Spider-Man and the Marvel Universe as a template, David built a fully functional future that was new enough to grip readers but different enough to provide for an alternate experience to regular Marvel continuity.
SPIDER-MAN NOIR
Marvel launched the Noir imprint in 2009, a selection of miniseries that integrated classic characters such as Spiderman and X-Men with films – Noir and Pulp Fiction. Spider-Man Noir was introduced as a result of this in Spider-Man Noir #1 in 2009, written by David Hine and Carmine Di Giandomenico.
He faced sinister and darker versions of the web crawler’s classic enemies such as Vulture and Green Goblin. Vulture was the person responsible for the death of Peter’s Uncle Ben.
Spider-Man Noir wears a trademark pitch-black costume and is well-known for his love of dual pistols. One of the most stylized Spider-Men to date, he’s the perfect character to adapt into the animated film.
SPIDER-GIRL
If old school is your thing, then MC2 Peter Parker and his daughter Mayday Parker are the heroes for you. Essentially, the MC2 Universe was designed to be the next chapter in the saga of the Marvel Universe, stories that exist in a possible future.
Spider-Girl saw a retired Peter Parker try to find a sense of non-super-hero normalcy after he lost his leg in the battle with the Green Goblin. After his daughter May develops spider powers, May and Peter are thrust back into a world of adventure.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse hits theaters on December 14th.
