Marvel’s The Eternals: Everything you need to know

Marvel Cinematic Universe recently announced their Phase 4 plans comprising a slate of movies, at San Diego Comic-Con, and the first movie to arrive will be none other than The Eternals. This movie project has caught a lot of attention as it is not only the first phase 4 movie to be released but also that not many fans are familiar with the Eternals arc. While there is only handful of information provided by Marvel for public knowledge in connection with the movie, we will be providing you with some important background information on the Eternals and things you can expect to see when the movie releases end of next year.

WHO IS DIRECTING THE MOVIE AND WHO ARE IN IT?

The Rider Director Chloe Zoe will be in charge of directing Marvel’s The Eternals and the star-studded cast will include Richard Madden as Ikaris, Angelina Jolie as Thena, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Brain Tyree Henry as Phastos and Lia McHugh as Sprite among others. Marvel is also in talks with Gemma Chan and Barry Keoghan to join the aforesaid star-studded cast.

WHAT IS IT BASED ON?

The Eternals is one of the many Marvel properties created by Jack Kirby and the movie will draw its inspiration from the said comic series. The Eternals made their first appearance in The Eternals #1 (1976) by Jack Kirby, in which they are introduced as immortal beings brought into existence millions of years ago as a consequence of experimentation and mutation of the earliest forms of Homo Sapiens by god-like beings known as The Celestials. Unfortunately, the aforesaid Eternals series did not receive the popularity as compared to other projects developed by Jack Kirby; and resultantly, the series was scrapped before even the story could be completed.

Thereafter, The Eternals appeared sporadically in the decade following the aforesaid series created by Jack Kirby. They were brought back by Writer Peter B. Gillis and artist Sal Buscema in the series launched in 1986, spanning over 12 issues which ended in 1986. The franchise was reintroduced in 2006, with a seven comics issue developed by writer Neil Gaiman and artist John Romita, Jr.

ORIGINS AND BACKGROUND STORY

In the Marvel Universe, Earth is full of mutants, inhumans and genetically altered individuals with superhuman abilities. The origins of the said species can be traced back to millions of years ago when a group of god-like beings, The Celestials, first visited Earth. The Celestials have already been introduced in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, with Ego, Peter Quill’s father, introducing himself as a Celestial. They experimented on the earliest forms of Homo Sapiens and consequently created three different sub-species namely, humans, Deviants and Eternals. The Deviants and Eternals have quite contrasting characteristics, the former have a destructive and war-like nature, with their monstrous appearance reflecting the same, whereas the latter were more balanced and followed the path of peace. Naturally, the Eternals and Deviants were always at conflict and humans would sometimes have to bear the brunt of such conflicts.

The Eternals are scattered across the universe as a result of a civil war that took place between two brothers namely, Kronos and Uranos. The war ended with Kronos banishing his brother, Uranos and his faction from Earth. Consequently, Uranos along with his followers inhabited the planet Uranus. Thereafter, the death of Kronos due to an accident resulted in the succession of his title as the ruler of Eternals in favour of his descendants namely, Zuras and A’Lars. Zuras was declared as the new ruler of the Eternals, while A’lars travelled to the moon named Titan, married a woman named Sui-San and repopulated Titan.

Does the name “A’Lars” ring any bell? A’Lars is also the father of Thanos (remember him!). Thanos carries the Deviant genes, which explains his hideous appearance and twisted nature. It, even so, happens that his mother tried to kill him at the time of his birth for the said fact. Thena (played by Angelina Jolie), is the daughter of Zuras and the natural descendant to the throne. Although, her claim to the throne is disputed by Ikaris (played by Richard Madden) several times, as Thena is known to have a complicated love affair with Kro, the ruler of Deviants.

THE ETERNALS’ POWERS AND ABILITIES

The Eternals are one of the strongest groups in the Marvel Universe and the cosmic energy flowing through their physical form gives them god-like powers and abilities. All the Eternals are potentially capable of superhuman strength, energy or cosmic blasts, physical regeneration, flight, telepathy, and telekinesis among others.

Marvel has seemingly kept much information in regard to Marvel’s The Eternals under wraps and we will try to bring you any updates or information that might surface. The movie is set to hit the theatres on November 6, 2020.
