Pokémon: Detective Pikachu was a stupendous success this summer, and Ryan Reynolds may not be simultaneously playing both Pikachu and Deadpool for many years to come (the writer of this piece definitely wants the same :P).
Reynolds recently shared the main reason that he went ahead with this role for his children. He mentioned that he had other offers but chose to prioritise Pikachu over everything else. The actor lent his voice to Detective Pikachu as it would be a movie that his kids could watch right now with their father in it.
As we know that Reynolds’ filmography has a lot of movies that may not be suitable for younger audiences, even though they are widely successful. On the other hand, Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is a PG rated movie and thus it caters easily to every section of the society.
Reynolds added, “I was excited to do a film that my kids would love. I don’t do a lot of films that are not rated-R. For me, that’s a big one.”
Reynolds is married to Blake Lively and has two kids with her, who are three and five-years-old. As we know a third child is on the way soon as well, so the actor feels it is important that he can share a small portion of this work with his growing family and also his young fans.
The box office numbers have been overwhelming. The movie has made $54 million at the domestic box office in its first weekend. Till date, it has topped $431 million worldwide.
The film’s director Robert Letterman commented on the future of Pokemon franchise – “It’s its own new world, but it’s tied into the other regions. So, it connects into the rest of the Pokémon universe.”
