Last week, WB made a huge announcement that there is Joker origin movie in the works under the direction of Todd Phillips. Along with this, there were rumors that the movie would be produced by Martin Scorsese. Now, The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Warner Bros. intends to use Martin Scorsese as a makeweight to rope in the Oscar winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio. He will play the lead role of the Clown Prince of crime. He is famously known for taking up very unique and difficult roles and turn them into a masterpiece performance. WB is looking at him to do the same in this movie and bring a new dimension to DC movies that are upcoming under a new banner separate from the mainstream DC Cinematic Universe.
Both Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio have tried to avoid getting involved in studio franchise movies throughout their careers. There is a possibility, even though slim, that DiCaprio might look at such movies after winning an Oscar for his performance in The Revenant. There could be no better role to introduce him to DC movies.
The Joker has always been an intriguing and mysterious character that demands the actors playing this role to push their limits. Previously, Heath Ledger and Jared Leto found themselves going through rigorous training before playing the Joker on the silver screen. It will definitely be a role that will challenge the acting capabilities of DiCaprio. This might be one of the main reasons that will sway his decision to don the role of the Clown Prince of Crime.
Another factor is that Martin Scorsese is a long time collaborator with DiCaprio. Their mutually beneficial partnership has been spread across quite a few movies like The Departed, Shutter Island, The Aviator, The Wolf of Wall Street and Gangs of New York. Therefore, if the rumors regarding Martin Scorsese producing the Joker origin movie is true then it could be a big incentive for DiCaprio to join him. Although, There’s no offer for DiCaprio, and sources say Scorsese’s deal to produce isn’t even finalized yet.
This news might bring enthusiasm to the DC fans but it is not met with same enthusiasm by the actor already playing the role of the Joker. Jared Leto, who played portrayed the character in Suicide Squad and set to continue to do so in Suicide Squad 2 and Harley Quinn spinoff is not particularly happy to see WB recruit a new actor to play the same role. He has made this known to his agents and there will be vultures who might wanna court him away from WB and DC altogether.
WB by bringing in DiCaprio can make their intentions known that they want to create serious movies with A list actors that will challenge for top cinematic awards like the Oscars. It will also open the gates for other A-list actors to try their hand in comic book related movies. All we can do is wish Warner Bros. luck in bringing Scorsese to DiCaprio to the DC cinematic world.
